Lefranc & Bourgeois Copal picture varnish brillant-gloss is very similar to the copal varnishes used by the old masters: Hard copal resin, boiled linseed oil and rectified turpentine. It is very glossy (50% dry extract) and has excellent protection against moisture. This is the only varnish that is irreversible.

The role of picture varnishes is to protect efficiently against dust, smoke, scratches, atmospheric pollution, etc. They are also used to give your paintings a smooth glossy or satin finish.

Caution: Never apply varnish to an oil painting before 6 months to 1 year, so as not to cause the varnish and paint to knit together. The consequences are serious because any future varnish removal and restoration will become impossible.
